Brentford

IMG_4826We pulled pins from our mooring at the bottom of the Hanwell flight of locks at 09.00 and started our short cruise into Brentford. There was only 2 locks and 2 miles to cover and Carolyn and Sharon along with Hamish walked a fair bit of the way.

IMG_4829Just before you get into Brentford basin you pass the massive Glaxo smith kline GSK headquarter building with this piece of Art outside . I have tried to find out exactly what it is, but without any success.

IMG_4834Once into the basin we were lucky enough to pick up this mooring just before the services with the GSK building behind us. This will be perfect for the next day or two as our next move will be down onto the tidal Thames.

IMG_4841We had a walk down to Thames lock at Brentford . This is the lock that lets you out onto the tidal Thames. It is a pair of locks with one of them under repair. Due to the Thames below the lock being tidal we have to ring the day before travelling and book a slot as they will only allow boats out when it’s safe to do so.

IMG_4839This is the view from the bridge over the lock at low tide with the main river Thames in the distance. It will be a turn right when we eventually get out and head up to Teddington.

IMG_4850We have enjoyed watching the planes going overhead for most of the day. With Heathrow not very far away their under carriage starts to drop as they pass over us.

IMG_4860There was a familiar boat moored just in front of us in the basin. It was George and Carol’s widebeam boat Still Rockin. They invited us and Rich and Sharon onto their beautiful boat for a drink where we all had a great evening and consumed several bottles of wine. Their boat is fitted out to a very high standard by Barn owl Boats who also fitted out Nb Oakapple. Still Rockin is nothing like living on a Narrowboat ,it’s more like a luxury floating flat that you can cruise in. Just like the last time we went onboard it got Carolyn thinking and talking about buying a widebeam. ..Maybe in a few years !
